Update: Low River Conditions Continue to Affect Europe River Cruises

Update: (October 7, 2015 – 8:00 a.m. EDT) — The summer of 2015 has been marked by persistent drought in Europe, with rainfall up to 60 percent lower than the average in many countries that lie within the watersheds of the continent’s major rivers, according to the European Commission. At present, stretches of the Danube and the Elbe are still experiencing low levels, leading to adjustments for river cruises operating there.

Europe River Cruise Season Faces Tough Climate Conditions

Cruise Critic is in contact with major river lines regarding disrupted itineraries and will continue to add information as it comes in.

APT

APT reports that all of its ships are currently running on schedule.

AMA Waterways

An AmaWaterways representative reports that they are experiencing no problems.

Avalon Waterways

A spokesperson for Avalon Waterways states they have no changes to itineraries.

CroisiEurope

Some of French cruise line CroisiEurope’s Danube cruises have required a replacement program on the first two to three days which were covered entirely by CroisiEurope. With the rains of the last few days CroisiEurope is hoping that the river’s water level will allow for a full navigation of scheduled itineraries.

Emerald Waterways

No changes to report at this time.

Low Water Levels: What You Need to Know

Scenic

A Scenic representative told Cruise Critic: “Due to high temperatures and little rain fall in Europe, the water level on the Danube between Passau and Regensburg has become so low that it is currently impassable. On 9 September, the Scenic Pearl and Scenic Ruby set sail from Amsterdam and Budapest respectively. They both have currently sailed to the affected section of the river and to ensure our guests have been able to continue with their cruise, we have performed a ship swap by way of motor coach. Details of the situation and alternative arrangements have been communicated to all guests on board. Our dedicated Operations team in Europe is closely monitoring the situation and we are communicating any necessary changes to guests as soon as information becomes available.”

Tauck

A Tauck representative told Cruise Critic: “We currently have one sailing, the September 6 departure of our “Amsterdam to Budapest by Riverboat” itinerary, that was briefly impacted by low water levels. Guests disembarked the ship yesterday and overnighted in Regensburg. They’ll be reboarding the riverboat today further downstream, and we anticipate that the remainder of their cruise will proceed normally.”
