(5:45 p.m. EDT) — After a two-year absence, Viking River Cruises will return to Ukraine with a Dnieper River cruise in 2016.
The 10-night “Kiev to the Black Sea” itinerary, slated for May and June 2016, will be on 196-passegenger Viking Sineus. Built in 1979, the vessel was renamed (from Viking Lomonosov) and refurbished in 2014.
The voyage includes three days in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, and four in Odessa on the Black Sea. The ship will stop in Kremenchug, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye (the ancestral home of the Cossacks) and Kherson along the way.
While Odessa is on the Black Sea, it does not fall into the Crimean region that was annexed by Russia in 2014. Although the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning for Ukraine in July 2015, the affected areas were Crimea and the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
