(10:15 a.m EDT) — Princess Cruises is bringing pub food to its fleet with the debut of the Salty Dog Gastropub on Crown Princess.
“A gastropub at sea is an innovative concept and it inspired me to get creative in the galley,” said Chef Ernesto Uchimura, with whom the line partnered for the concept. Uchimura is the former executive chef at Umami Burger and current chef of Plan Check Kitchen + Bar in Los Angeles. “The Salty Dog Gastropub’s menu will not only satisfy comfort food cravings but also offer guests new pub food flavors and tastes perfectly paired with a craft beer or fine whiskey.”
At the Salty Dog Gastropub, which will be located within the Wheelhouse Bar but will have its own signage, passengers will be able to choose three small plates from the menu (a flat fee of $19 applies). Plate choices will include pale ale pork cheeks, spicy stout short ribs, wild mushroom saute and lobster mac & cheese, among other options. Salty Dog Gastropub also will offer the signature Ernesto burger: rib eye and short rib beef patty, grilled pork belly, caramelized kimchi, beer-battered jalapeno, charred onion aioli and topped with cave-aged gruyere cheese.
Also new in the Wheelhouse Bar is an international whiskey menu, featuring Scotch whiskeys and bourbons from the United States, Ireland, Japan and Australia. The menu includes a rotating selection of whiskey flights.
Both the Salty Dog Gastropub and whiskey menu are already onboard Crown Princess and will be added to Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess in mid-December. The whiskey menu at the Wheelhouse Bar also will be rolled out to Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, Sun Princess, Diamond Princess and Golden Princess by the end of 2015 and will be onboard all ships, with the exception of Pacific Princess, by the end of summer 2016.
Gastropubs are a growing trend on cruise ships. Royal Caribbean was the first out of the gate with Michael’s on Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, while Norwegian Escape offers the District Brew House with plates provide by Food Republic. Carnival Cruise Line also will feature a brewery on its new-build Carnival Vista when it launches next year.
