(10:30 a.m EST) — Cirque du Soleil’s award-winning acrobats, contortionists and aerialists are heading to the high seas through a partnership with MSC Cruises. One-of-a-kind shows will be featured on the line’s four Meraviglia ships, the first of which — MSC Meraviglia — is scheduled to debut June 2017.
In a first for Cirque du Soleil, it will create brand-new shows exclusively for MSC. A 21-million dollar entertainment and dining venue will be built to house the dinner shows, which will be performed six nights a week with two performances each night. The Quebec-based troupe previously had a partnership with Celebrity Cruises in the early 2000s, through which individual acts from its most famous shows were performed revue-style in the main theater on select ships.
The 10,760 square-foot, 450-seat Cirque du Soleil dining and show lounge will be located at the back of the 4,500-passenger Meraviglia-class ships. The first, MSC Meraviglia, debuts June 2017 and will spend its inaugural season sailing the Western Mediterranean from three ports of embarkation: Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona.
