(9:20 a.m EST) — The heritage of Cunard’s Carinthia liners has inspired the design of the new lounge on Queen Mary 2, which will see the current Winter Garden transformed into a stylish all-day venue.
Cunard has released details of the Carinthia Lounge that will be installed during the flagship’s multi-million pound refit in 2016. The lounge will feature powder blue, cream and gold decor, a “wine wall”, dark walnut dance floor and Art Deco-style screens.
Serving light breakfast and lunch, afternoon tea followed by evening drinks, refreshments and entertainment, the lounge next to the Canyon Ranch Spa will also provide passengers with a place to unwind.
Cunard director Angus Struthers said: “In the roaring twenties Carinthia embodied the spirit of travel which saw the rise in popularity of world cruises and winter voyages. It is only fitting to remember the legacy of Carinthia and bestow this name onto our new lounge set to launch following the refit. We believe this space will truly elevate the Queen Mary 2 experience, adding new innovative culinary options, as well as another level of refined relaxation.
Reactions from the Cruise Critic Message Boards have been varied. kendon said: “I don’t care for the décor at all. It looks dated before it starts.” Whereas BoisDore simply wrote: “Looks sharp!”
The refurbishment will take place from May 27 to June 21, 2016, at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany. It will also include 15 new single cabins — a first for the vessel — 30 additional Britannia Club Balcony rooms and a comprehensive refurbishment of all existing Club Balcony Cabins.
