Silver Muse Keel-Laying Ceremony Takes Place in Italy

(1:05 p.m. EST) — Silversea Cruises’ new flagship is officially under construction at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, following today’s traditional keel-laying ceremony.

In new take on the longstanding maritime tradition, the line welded eight lucky coins — instead of the usual one — into the keel of the 596-passenger, all-suite ship that is set to debut in April 2017. A company spokesman explained that each coin represented the seven continents that Silversea ships sail to, along with a specially designed Silver Muse coin.

The addition of Silver Muse will bring the Silversea fleet to nine, and at 40,700 tons and with 298 suites it will be the line’s largest vessel. Silver Muse will sail throughout Europe, Canada, North and South America and the Caribbean, taking in more than 130 destinations in 36 countries.

Silversea’s CEO Enzo Visone said: “Today marks a significant milestone for Silversea with the birth of our newest ship. We proudly sail to all seven continents discovering new destinations and ports with our intimate, boutique vessels and we are now one step closer to introducing Silver Muse to the fleet.”

Full details of the ship have yet to be released, but Visone said the ship would feature an “unprecedented variety” of dining options, and a design that would encourage passengers to enjoy “open air” cruising.
