Windstar's Star Pride Runs Aground Off Coast of Panama

(10:03 a.m. EST) — Windstar’s 212-passenger Star Pride has run aground off the coast of Panama.

All passengers and crew are safe, according to an update on the cruise line’s Facebook page, however the remainder of the cruise has been canceled due to damage to some areas of the hull. The ship’s December 26 sailing from Puerto Caldera to Colon has also been canceled.

The incident happened at 6:15 a.m. December 22 as the ship came into anchor at Isla de Coiba, a remote island off Panama’s west coast. After passengers disembarked for a scheduled private island excursion, the ship’s technical team identified problems with the hull and declared that that it was no longer fit to sail.

Passengers were transferred to the mainland by Windstar’s sister ship, Star Breeze, as well as Paul Gauguin’s Tere Moana, which happened to be sailing nearby. They are en route to Golfito, Costa Rica, and will be transferred to San Jose where they can choose to stay for the duration of their vacation, or fly home.

Star Pride passengers will receive a 100 percent refund and 100 percent of cruise fare paid for future cruise credit.

The ship will be towed to Balboa in Panama for further inspection and repairs.

Cruise Critic will update the story when we have more information.
