(1:45 p.m. EST) — AmaWaterways debuted AmaStella, the first of two family-friendly river cruise ships coming from the line this spring, in Europe this week.
Along with sister ship AmaViola (coming in April), the 158-passenger ship has several cabin configurations that have been designed for groups and multi-generational travelers. They include:
- 12 staterooms that can accommodate up to three family members each
- Six sets of adjoining cabins that can be connected via an internal doorway, accommodating families of up to five
- Four suites with convertible sofa-beds that can accommodate families of up to four
The changes in the cabins were made with the line’s upcoming partnership with Adventures by Disney in mind. The five weeklong Adventures by Disney cruises on the Danube, which feature activities specifically for families, will begin this summer.
Family cruising is a relatively new phenomenon for river lines. Currently, only Uniworld and Tauck offer periodic European river sailings that are geared to families. Just this week, Tauck announced that it would double the number of family sailings it has in 2017, from 10 to 20, including a new itinerary on France’s Seine River.
Other features on the new ships include more twin-balcony cabins and a larger fitness room, salon and massage area. The ships will also have The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant, a sun deck and heated pool with a swim-up bar; and Entertainment on Demand in the cabins. Wine, beer and soft drinks are available at lunch and dinner, and complimentary bottled water is provided in the cabins.
AmaStella’s maiden voyage set sail from Amsterdam to Budapest. The ship’s other itineraries include tulip cruises in The Netherlands, as well as Danube cruises.
